TESCO INTRODUCES STRONGER CARRIER BAGS

Supermarket chain Tesco is introducing a "new generation of stronger bags" in its UK stores this week after an investigation by the BBC's Watchdog programme found that its bags were the thinnest on the market and at great risk of splitting during transit.

Tesco carrier bags have got 25 per cent thinner in the past eight years and correspondingly weaker, said a Watchdog spokesman, and under testing lasted just 15 seconds when filled to the maximum before breaking.

Asda bags lasted just 12.5 seconds, while Morrisons and Marks & Spencer bags remained intact for more than six minutes.
